Health Testing

  • OFA

All of the dogs in our breeding program have been health tested rigorously and will continue to be health tested as they age. All of their current and most recent x-rays and health certs are linked or shown on their profiles. You can also search their registered names on the OFA website as all of their health testing is available to the public. We currently use OFA to test for hips, elbows, spine, dentition, eyes, heart, thyroid, brucellosis, and more. We complete prelims around 1 year, officials at 2 years, and continue to recheck every few years as recommended.

  • PennHip & SV

Occasionally, some of our dogs will also be cross tested through PennHip or SV. Those results will also be listed on their profiles. PennHip testing can often be more accurate testing for hip dysplasia which is one of the number one concerns in German Shepherds. PennHip results will be a number that can vary in average depending on the breed. The average PennHip score for German Shepherds is approximately 0.41. This score indicates the degree of hip joint laxity, with lower scores suggesting a lower risk of developing hip dysplasia. The median score is around 0.38, and breeding dogs with scores above these averages may increase the risk of hip issues in future generations. The PennHip positioning for x-rays is very different than the positioning of OFAs, which means the results from one organization to another can vary (ex. OFA could be rated Good but the PennHip score might be above the average number for GSDs and vice versa). PennHip and SV ratings are counted as official scores on dogs 12 months and older.

  • DNA HEALTH

Our dogs complete DNA testing through AKC+ Health which is also linked on their profiles. This DNA test shows us any recessive genetic diseases that are common in GSDS and Belgian Malinois, such as Degenerative Myelopathy, MDR1, Scotts syndrome and more.
